The last three and a half decades have been witnessing a remarkable transformation in the educational status of Muslims in Kerala, supposedly the most backward in education. The driving force behind this effort has been THE MUSLIM EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY.
The movement started under the great leadership of late Dr. Abdul Gafoor in 1964 at Calicut, was supported by a large number of professionals and businessmen, and in a short span of time it spread to all districts in Kerala. As on today it is the largest Muslim service organization in the country with strength of more than 7000 members. It not only has units in each and every district of Kerala, but also has spread to neighboring states. In Kerala, taluk level units or even panchayath level units are coming up and the organization is growing fast, extending its services further to reach every nook and corner of the state.
|PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES|
During the initial years, the society’s main projects were for running the educational institutions, but as the years passed by, MES has introduced numerous social welfare programmes for the benefit of the community. The scheme of awarding scholarship to the deserving students was its first programme and it was a great success as there were tremendous response from the community and the well- wishers. Encouraged by such an overwhelming support from the community for service activities, the Society diversified its activities in to various educational projects. The organization spread to the neighboring districts of Calicut and within no time MES was in all the districts of Kerala.
As the Society has no political links, people from all walks of life joined its fold and very soon it became a major platform for all Muslims to take up social welfare activities and to start educational institutions.
When MES was busy in collecting the scholarship endowments, many philanthropists came forward with tempting offers to start colleges in their districts. MES Kalladi College was the first institution and colleges in Ponnani, Kodungallore. Mampad, Valancherry and other places duly followed. A number of schools were also started with the help and support of people in different districts. MES Raja Residential Central School was established and it became a model institution for other schools to follow. Most of the schools are run on CBSE syllabus now. Parallel colleges, especially for women were also established in different districts. Kozhikode Women’s College run by the MES Ladies wing became the leading institution imparting even post graduate education for girls. In different districts and taluks, many institutions like hostels, hospitals, cultural centers, orphanages, industrial training institutes etc. were started.
MES hostel at Calicut became the centre for MES activities housing the MES Central Office. Both the Youth Wing and Women’s Wing were established and MES has become the largest Muslim Organization managing a large number of institutions in the state. A matriculate higher secondary school was started in Chennai. The Society awards scholarship worth more than Rs.2 million annually for economically weaker and educationally brilliant students.
|IN THE FIELD OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION|
In 1994, there was a major breakthrough when MES COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING was started as the first self-financing college in the private sector in Kerala. High Tech Vocational Training Centers and Institute for Information and Technology are in the process of being established in all parts of Kerala.
Another remarkable venture is the opening of MES MEDICAL COLLEGE. MES has already got the N.O.C. from Government of Kerala for a Dental College. MES is forging ahead fulfilling the aims, for which the Society was mainly established and thereby helping the people to break the shackles of ignorance and to advance educationally. The Society’s commitment towards establishing quality institutions of excellence, inspired to take up the challenges of setting up various professional institutions imparting world class education with excellence. As part of this programme various professional institutions with different technologies and curriculum is in the anvil.
There are about one hundred and fifty reputed institutions, established and impeccably run by MES and half a million students from all over India are undergoing high quality education in various courses.
The track record is definite, colorful and three dimensional. Substantial experience has been acquired in this forty dedicated odd years and this has been put in to practice with expertise and competency in running the institutions. This brought reputation and results. The first batch of students from MES Medical College Perinthalmanna bagged 12 ranks in the Calicut University examinations. Every year almost all the institutions are having colorful results and bag the distinction of University ranks.
